President David Ward called the meeting to order at 7:35pm by going around the room and doing introductions.

  1. Review of Meeting Minutes: USA Meeting Minutes from June18th were reviewed.  Andy made a motion to accept the minutes as they are and Donna seconded it.
  2. Registrar’s report (Karen Selwyn): Karen passed out team packets to those coaches who were at the meeting.  In the packet was a cover letter explaining a few things to all the coaches.  Also in the packet are a team roster, practice schedule, medical waiver forms (which should be kept in your first aid kit), and some code of conduct forms (hand them out to your parents). Any questions on the packet call Karen.  As of today we have 362 players registered to play.  We have openings on only a few groups, which include.  U-6, two openings at U-8coed, two openings at U-10girls and U-12 girls, one opening at U-13 girls and four openings at U-14 girls.  If you have anyone interested in filling these spots please direct him or her to Karen.  We are in need of one U-8 coach.  Larry Fritz resigned from coaching however David Cromartie has volunteered to take Larry’s team and return to the USA as a coach.
  3. Treasurer’s report (Al Selwyn):  Al reported that at the present time we have a balance of $2920.02 in our treasurer at the close of the Spring season.  After Fall registration we now have a balance of $19,311.00.  David Ward introduced the Fall 2002 Proposed Budget to the group.  We really need to find some more sponsors for this to work out.  Andy made a motion to accept the budget and Jody seconded it.
  4. Coaches Education (David Ward):  Andy reported that Andy, Lisa and Clif all completed their D license program.  Congrats.  Andy announced that Frederick United in Conjunction with Coerver Coaching staff will be hosting a Coerver Coaching Clinic at Urbana High School on Monday July 29th from 6:00-8:00pm.  The cost of the clinic will be $10.00 (you will not get reimbursed for this clinic from USA).  You can register online by going to http://www.frederickunited.com and clicking on the Coerver Coaching Clinic icon or by calling Brian Parker at 301-682-7974. There is an NSCAA state and regional clinic on August 17th and 18th tentative site will be Urbana High School.  The cost for all USA coaches and their assistants will be paid for by the Association.  Please let David know ASAP if you plan on attending. The State clinic will be on August 17th and the regional clinic will be both days.  The times should be from 12:00-6:00pm.  This will be a participation clinic so come prepared to play.  David reported that he attended the week-long Brazil clinic at Mt. St. Mary’s and he said it was very good.
  5. Coaches Night:  There will be a coaches night at the Urbana Park lower field on Thursday August 1st at 7:00pm. If you have practice scheduled for the lower field on that day please end it by 7:00pm.  We will cover dribbling maneuvers and turns.  All coaches and their assistants are welcome. This will be a participation clinic so come prepared to play.
  6. Field Maintenance (David Ward):  Looks like the old hill will be ready in the fall for U-8 games only - this will not be a practice field at this point.  All we need now is a little rain.
  7. Newsletter update/status (Carole Thompson):  Remember if you have anything you want in the upcoming Newsletters please let Carole know. We hope to have our next issue out before our first fall games and another issue when the season is over.
  8. Indoor Soccer:  The Goal is no longer.  Lisa will ask Clif to do some research on other facilities and report back to the group.
  9. Fields Coordinator/Committee: (Practice Fields) We were able to obtain Oakdale ES for practice.  The field is not very good yet.  But we needed to get our foot in the door.  This is a new school and should be a great place to practice in the near future.  If you are scheduled to practice there you were picked out of a hat.  Please be patient and things will work out.

  1. Fall 2002 Teams:  Each team will be put into Division 1, 2 or 3.  Division 1 players were picked by evaluation scores and coach's evaluation. All others were placed on division 2 or 3 teams according to request, neighborhoods, previous coaches, carpool etc.  The teams will be given a power rating and that rating will be sent into the league for scheduling.

  1. Equipment (David Ward):  All equipment has been ordered.  This will be ready for pick up from the shed the week of August 1st.  First aids kits will be also available.  They will be in the shed with your name on them.  There were a few new things put into your first aid kits.  You now have first aids books (please read them before you begin coaching) and facemasks for rescue breathing. Make sure you read the directions well in advance of ever having to use them.  Just a reminder any injury involving blood wear the gloves we have provided before treating the injury.

  1. Sponsors:  We are still in need of sponsors for the upcoming year.  We really need to buy new U-8 goals and some Pugg goals for the good souls at Oakdale.  Sponsors help pay for all of this.  If you have anyone in mind please give his or her information to Becky Ward or email David Ward at david.ward@acterna.com.

  1. Small Field Size:  David brought up that in German research the size of fields for 7v7 games works out much better with smaller fields (35x55).  This means more ball touches and more soccer situations for all the players.  The league minimum is (40x60) we all agreed to try out the smaller fields for the fall season.  Please report back as to how this worked out for your team.  The U8 field will also be downsized to 30x50 for the same reason.

  1. Injury Reports:  David passed out an injury report draft.  He will have the final copy put into your first aid kits.  Please fill out this report and return to David or Al  ASAP.  The report should be used for any injury or situation in which additional attention to the situation is required.  For example additional medical attention or whenever authorities are called.  Any questions please give David a call.

  1. Lining the Fields:  The upper field is scheduled to be lined on August 17th.  We will need 3 or 4 people to volunteer to help.  The lower and the U-8 fields will be lined on August 31st.  Please if you are available to help out let David know.

  1. 4 v 4 Tournament:  The tournament is August 24th with a rain date of the 25th.  All Urbana teams are entered with no charge.  Please get back to David no later then August 21st with your entries.  Remember the teams are limited to five players.  If you have extra players you may be able to add them to other Urbana teams.  There is a kickoff meeting scheduled for August 5th at 7:30 at the park Pavilion. This tournament is run by volunteers - the more help we have the more successful the day will be.  This years participation awards are going to be frisbees.  Al has ordered the trophies.

  1. USA Scholarship:  Discussion tabled for next meeting.

  1. New Business:  David went over some practice things.  No practice on new U-8 field.  Lower/Upper fields at park are game fields so try not to wear down the penalty and goal areas.   Oakdale ES be patient this is our foot in the door and things will improve there.  Urbana HS School is not available.  Urbana ES there will be some baseball and lacrosse.  Use safety for the kids and stay clear of flying balls.  Spring Ridge Park.  Please follow the park rules and be courteous to the residents.  Windsor Knolls MS we will be sharing with LUYAA.  If you move any goals please make sure that they are returned to position and anchored back in place. There are some small goals and hula-hoops in the shed please use them if you desire but return them each evening so they are available for other teams to use.

Al has some wonderful words for the group.  You need to remember to enjoy the children and have fun with them.  This is what it is all about.  The best coaches are those who are remembered for a lifetime.  Enjoy it.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:30pm.

Next meeting scheduled for Tuesday August 20, 2002 at 7:30pm
