Urbana Soccer Association Monthly Meeting

Tuesday April 15, 2003

Ijamsville Methodist Church

Attendees:  David Ward, Andy Keen, Karen Selwyn, Al Selwyn

USA President David Ward called the meeting to order at 7:39am.

Minutes:  The minutes were approved as submitted by Al Selwyn and seconded by Andy Keen.

Registrar’s Report:  (Karen Selwyn) Coaches - please tell Karen (karenselwyn@yahoo.com or 301-865-4600 mailbox #1) if players have dropped off of your team so we don't waste money buying trophies, balls, etc. for them.

Treasurer's Report:  (Al Selwyn)  No report

Vice President’s Report: (Andy Keen)  Andy will email person responsible for field lining on Wednesdays. Please line fields on Thursday and use Friday as a rain date. We need to line fields before Easter weekend and Memorial Day weekend even though there are no games (the lines won't last 2 weeks).

Secretary’s Report: (Donna Pike) Not present

Coaches Education:  (David Ward) No local courses planned at the current time. MSYSA will be offering a C license course in early August. See www.msysa.org.

Field Maintance:  (David Ward) 1,000+ yards of sod were installed by Parks/Rec on the Upper Field at Urbana Park. Looks good so far. Thanks to all the people at Parks/Rec who made this happen.

Newsletter update/status:  (Carole Thompson) Latest edition was distributed via mail the end of March. Next newsletter is planned for late May. Dodie Sprenkle has volunteered to help Carole. If you have questions, suggestions, etc., please contact Dodie (Sprenkd@aol.com) or Carole (carol@beachbrosprint.com). They are always looking for information from players similar to what Bryan Thompson did for the March newsletter.

Registration fee increase: (David Ward) David discussed some growth statistics that show USA at 38 teams in Spring 2005. At that point, we will have outgrown our currently available and short-term projected field space. David suggested we increase registration fees by $5 and set up a field fund to help us be able to build new fields. Increase was unanimously approved. Increase will be effective for the Fall 2003 season and the $5 per player per season will be placed in the field fund.

April 27th clinic for 4th grade and older: (David Ward) Dave Stinson (UHS senior, 4-year varsity starter) will be doing a free clinic for all soccer players 4th grade and older. Soccer clinic will be held at Urbana High School on the soccer practice field (next to the water tower) from 1:00-3:00PM on 4/27. Please call Dave at 301-831-9022 or email at stins23@msn.com to register. This is his senior project so let's please give him the support he needs.

USA College Scholarship:  (Al Selwyn) The Association is offering a $500 college scholarship for past USA players who attended or are attending Urbana High School and will be enrolling in an accredited college/university in the Fall 2003. Application deadline is May 15. Applications can be found at Urbana High School or online at www.urbanasoccer.org (look under New).

Dutch 4v4 Tournament: (David Ward) The Association will be hosting a Dutch-style 4v4 tournament on Saturday 4/19. All age groups are coed and are at the following times:

·        U8s: 10:00-11:30

·        U10s: 11:30-1:00

·        U12s: 1:00-2:30

·        U14s: 2:30-4:00

·        Open: 4:00-5:30

Tournament will be held on the Upper Field at Urbana Park. Players need to show up 15 minutes prior to start time for registration. Urbana Soccer merchandise (warmups, t-shirts, caps, etc.) will be on sale at the tournament.

June 8 coaches/volunteers game/picnic: (Donna Pike) No report.

Fall 2003 player evaluations/tryouts: (David Ward) For Fall 2003, we will move to a tryout format for division 1 teams. Players will come to specific tryouts for each division 1 team (as opposed to age-group wide evaluations that were held previously). Tryouts will be held the first 2 weeks in June. Attendance is mandatory for all players who wish to play on a division 1 team in Fall 2003. Exceptions will have to be approved by the Board of Directors. Each age group coaching staff will run their specific tryout and be responsible for picking the division 1 team(s) for that age group.

DC United/Freedom doubleheader tickets:  (David Ward/Al Selwyn)  David has ordered 110 tickets.  The date of the game will be May 17th and the price will be $15.00 per ticket.  If interested please contact David (david.ward@acterna.com or 301-865-4600).  All checks should be payable to Urbana Soccer Association. Both games are at RFK Stadium with the Freedom playing at 5:00 and DC United playing at 7:30.

Rebounding “benches” for Upper/Lower Fields:  (David Ward) Hopefully these are being used! We've made good use at of the ones on the Lower Field for our U6s. If you think we need additional walls, please contact David so we can plan more for the fall.

End of Season Tournaments:  (David Ward) Boonsboro will be holding and end-of-season tournament. More on that soon. MAYAA will be holding a U-8 only tournament as well.

UK Elite Camp for Summer 2003:  (Donna Pike) Donna has been in contact with Steve Roper from the UK Elite.  The camp will be held at Urbana Park the week of July 7th, 2003.  We will have two sessions morning and evening.  There will be flyers coming out to all the coaches beginning of Spring Season.  At this time our camp is listed on the UK Elite website (www.ukelite.com) and you can start registering now.  Cost is $115.

Shooting Wall for lower field:  (David Ward) The building of the shooting wall is on hold until we complete the spring season.  We have approval from Parks and Rec to build the wall.  Bob Hadjar will take on handling this project.

Plugging holes in U-10/12 goals:  (Al Selywn) Al has started the process of plugging the holes in all of the goals to prevent bee infestation (which has already started). He should be finished soon.

New Business:  (All) David will be emailing the weekly soccer TV listing to the Association starting next week. Watching soccer on TV is a great way to improve a player's awareness of the game.

We will be holding elections for Treasurer and Vice President at our May meeting (May 20). Nominations and people who are interested should contact David (david.ward@acterna.com or 301-865-4600)

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00pm.
