Urbana Soccer Association Monthly Meeting

Attendees: David Ward, Andy Keen, Karen Selwyn, Al Selwyn, Donna Pike, Jim Johnston, Rob Bubello, Brian Downs, David Cromartie
USA President David Ward called the meeting to order at 7:42 pm.
Minutes: The minutes were approved as submitted by Karen Selwyn and seconded by Andy Keen.
Registrar’s Report: (Karen Selwyn) Karen reported that registrations are coming in a bit slow this season. We now only have 164 players registered. Registration closes on July 1, 2003. Karen handed out background checks to all coaches who were present at the meeting. If you were not at the meeting please make sure that you get a form from Karen. The background checks will be processed on line using rapsheet.com. All coaches who are coaching their own children that child’s registration will be paid for by USA all other coaches children not playing on the coaches team will have to be registered and paid for.
Treasurers Report: (Al Selwyn) Al reported that we have $6,527.00 USA Treasury. There are outstanding bills for tournament fees as well as trophies. We should have around $4500.00 in the treasury to begin the fall season.
Vice President’s Report (Andy Keen) Andy reported that all field forms have been filled out for all schools that are going to be used by the USA. The issue here is that our insurance runs from September 1 to August 31. However, this will roll over for the new season. Andy will have to take care of this with the schools when the new policy is received.
Secretary’s Report (Donna Pike) Nothing to report.
Coaches Education: (David Ward) There will be a NSCAA Coaches Clinic held at Urbana High School. This clinic will be three separate levels. The State recommended for all new and U-8 coaches will be a one-day clinic on August 9, 2003 from 9:00am to 2:00pm. The Regional is recommended for U-10 and above coaches is a two-day clinic on August 8th from 3:00pm to 9:00pm and August 9th from 9:00am to 6:00pm. The Advanced Regional is a three-day clinic on August 8th from 3:00pm to 9:00pm, August 9th and August 10th from 9:00am to 6:00pm. The USA will handle payment for these clinics. If interested you need to communicate to David Ward and he will give you further information.
Field Maintance: (David Ward) David reported we are still on track to take the U-8 and lower fields out of commission for the Fall season. The fields are becoming unplayable and maintance needs to be done to bring these fields up to shape and safe for the kids. Chuck Woodcock will handle this job. This will be done right after the 4 v 4 tournament. All games will be played at Oakdale and Urbana Elementary Schools.
Newsletter update/status: (Carole Thompson) Carole Thompson did another great job. The Newsletter went out to all USA members the end of May. The next newsletter is scheduled for the end of August this will be a pre Fall Season newsletter.
Indoor Soccer: (Cliff Carey) Cliff Carey was not present at the meeting.
Pictures: (Jamie Dunn) All pictures are in the shed. Please pick them up this week. David Ward has all coach’s plaques and will make sure they get to the coaches when he returns from vacation in July. If you are expecting a plaque please contact David.
Spring 2003 wrap-up (All) Congratulations to the U-8 Strikers who took first place in the MAYAA Division One Tournament. David reported that this spring we had a record of rainouts. Many of these games have been rescheduled and played. David can only reschedule USA home games. If you had a rain out and you haven’t played as of yet you probably will not play that game. David received positive feedback on the ref coverage this season. Many local Urbana kids have become refs. David made a motion to add the Code of Conduct for all registered players this was approved by Brian Downs and seconded by Jim Johnston.
USA College Scholarship (Al Selwyn) The first USA $500.00 college scholarship was awarded to Annabelle Peake. Annabelle has sent the USA a really nice thank you note.
Revamp U-8 program into 4 v 4 program (David Ward) David brought up for discussion changing the format of our U-8 program from the now 7 v 7 to play 4 v 4 and compete against other 4 v 4 programs. There was a lengthily discussion and the subject was tabled for a later date.
Fall 2003 Division one tryouts: (David Ward) U-14 tryouts have been rained out already twice. Lets try again on June 17th. Numbers for age groups. U-8 20, U 10 boys 18, U –12 coed 12, U-14 girls 23. This is the first attempt at actual division one tryouts and they went very well. All the age group leaders of tryouts did a really great job and everything looked very organized.
Summer Pickup Games: (Paul Young) The summer pickup games will begin this week. On Tuesday evenings from 7:00pm until dark will be high school/adult age groups. Thursday evenings from 7:00pm until dark will be U-12 and U-14 age groups. All games will be played on the upper field and Paul Young will coordinate. No need to sigh up just show up and you will be put on a team.
New Field Status: (David Ward) There is no update from the Friends School.
End of Season tournaments: (David Ward) Boonsboro Tournament there is only one U-12 boys team playing in the tournament this season. MAYAA U-8 tournament the Strikers played in the division one tournament and the Tigers played in division two.
Participation awards: (Al Selwyn) all coaches have now picked up all participation awards. Thanks to Al for the organization of this.
UK Elite Camp for Summer 2003: (Donna Pike) Donna has been in contact with Steve Roper from the UK Elite. There are about 50 players registered at this time. Andy Keen will be available on the morning of July 7th to meet and greet the UK Elite staff.
Shooting Wall for lower field: (David Ward) Bob Hadjar is handling this project and we should see work on the wall starting this summer.
Fall 2003 budget approval: (David Ward) David Ward presented the Fall 2003 Budget to the Board of Directors. The budget was approved by Donna Pike and seconded by Brian Downs.
New Business: (All) The 2003 4 v 4 tournament will be held on August 23rd with a rain date of August 24th. David will be working on this in July. If you would like to help out please contact David.
