Urbana Soccer Association Monthly Meeting
Wednesday September 17, 2003
Ijamsville Methodist Church
Attendees: David Ward, Karen Selwyn, Al Selwyn, Andy Keen
USA President David Ward called the meeting to order at 7:55 pm.
Minutes: Al motioned that we accept the minutes from the August meeting and Andy seconded the motion.
Registrar’s Report: (Karen Selwyn) All rosters are final as of the league meeting on 9/24. After that time, there can be absolutely no roster changes, additions, etc.
Treasurers Report: (Al Selwyn) Al reported that we have $11,577 in the treasury. Remaining big items are field maintenance, participation awards and tournament fees.
Vice President’s Report (Andy Keen) No report.
Secretary’s Report (Donna Pike) Not present.
Coaches Education: (David Ward) FCYSL sponsored a USSF 'E' license class on 9/14 and 9/21. There are no other classes planned this fall.
Field Maintance: (David Ward) David met with Kurt Nilsson (Newsom Seed) and Bob Browning (Parks/Rec) to discuss field maintenance on the Lower and U-8 Fields at Urbana Park. The following work will be done: cut grass very short (Parks/Rec), apply gypsum (Parks/Rec), aerate five passes (Parks/Rec), apply compost (USA/Parks/Rec), seed (Parks/Rec) and fertilize (Parks/Rec). We are scheduled to do most of this work on Wed. 9/24. USA is spending approximately $2,000 for the compost and David lined up a top dresser for Parks/Rec to use to apply. Parks/Rec is putting in a lot of effort to get this done as well and we owe them a big thank you.
USA bought fertilizer for the soccer fields at Oakdale MS and Oakdale ES. FCPS applied last week. Thanks to Peter Zeir (FCPS) for doing this work.
We will seed, fertilize and aerate Upper Field and the soccer fields at Oakdale MS and Oakdale ES immediately after fall season.
Newsletter: (Carole Thompson) The first Fall 2003 newsletter should be in your mailbox - enjoy. Thanks to Carole for another great job.
Fall Season Status: (All) Everything seems to be progressing well. Teams at Oakdale MS are reminded to move goals back to the fences if they are the last game of the day (and after each practice).
Fall Tournaments: (David Ward) The end-of-season FCYSL tournament will be held on 11/1,2 and 11/7,8. Registration for the tournament closes on 9/23. To enter, just send David an email (david.ward@acterna.com) instructing him that you wish to enter your team in the tournament. At this time, only Bob Hajjar's U-14 Coed team has entered. The Association will pay the tournament entry fee for all USA teams. You will play on one weekend or the other (not both). Unfortunately, we won't know which one until mid-October probably.
MAYAA U-8 Tournament - no information on this yet, but I'll assume it will be on 11/1. U-8 coaches will be notified as soon as I get info on this one.
Coaches Game/Picnic: (Donna) Cancelled for Fall 2003.
FASA Update: (Donna) Not present
UHS Nights: (David) We had 63 players attend Thursday's UHS girls game vs. Middletown. Next (and last) UHS night is Monday 9/22 with the UHS boys also playing Middletown. Game is at the UHS stadium with JV playing at 5:00 and varsity playing at approximately 6:45. All players wearing their Urbana jersey will be given free admission as well as a $1 concession.
Indoor Soccer: (David) Registration for winter 2003-2004 sessions has started at the Discovery Center (Germantown Soccerplex) and is available online at http://www.mdsoccerplex.org. Cost is $625 per team per session.
Registration at the Frederick Sportsplex is slated to start on October 1. More on that later.
Sessions do fill up early so if you want to play, please get your team registered.
NOTE: The Association does not hold formal registration for indoor soccer. Individual teams decide whether or not they want to play and it is up to each team to register and pay.
New Fields Status: (David) Friends Meeting School has decided not to pursue a full-sized soccer field on their front property. However, we are still discussing the possibility of building a U10/12-sized field that would be available for Association usage for practice/games.
Shooting Wall for Lower Field: (Bob Hajjar) James Kipp contacted a contractor who gave us a bid of $3,800 to do all of the work for the wall. Unfortunately, this is about three times what we want to pay. At this point, we'll just put this project on hold.
New Business: (All) None.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:26pm.
