Urbana Soccer Association Monthly Meeting

Wednesday May 19, 2004

Ijamsville Methodist Church

Attendees:  David Ward, Karen Selwyn, Al Selwyn, Steve McKinley, Brian Downs, Stephanie Downs, Andy Keen, Mark Keating, Kathy Davis

USA President David Ward called the meeting to order at 7:40pm.

Minutes:  The minutes were approved as submitted by Karen Selwyn and seconded by Andy Keen.

Registrar’s Report:  (Karen Selwyn) In-person registration for Fall 2004 will be held on June 5 and June 26 from 9-noon at the Urbana Fire Station. We will also have in-person registration during the first week of tryouts - June 1-4.

Treasurers Report:  (Al Selwyn) Currently have $10,679 in the treasury. Only remaining fees are normal monthly fees and end-of-season tournament fees.

Field Fund contains $3,890.

Vice President’s Report: (Andy Keen) Andy is working on school field request forms for Fall 2004 and will have them submitted to schools before the end of the month. Current requests are for UES (M-F), WKMS (M-F), OES (Tu/Th) and OMS (Tu/W/F). We will also have Urbana Park (M-F) and Spring Ridge (M/Th).

NOTE: Please check the field lining email that Andy sent out previously and please line your assigned field on Thursday/Friday. We haven't been doing a very good job at this lately.

Secretary’s Report: (Donna Pike) Not present.

Coaches Education:  (David Ward) No local courses on the MSYSA web site right now. Al will contact Coach Mac/Brett Haight to arrange for NSCAA courses at UHS in August.

MSYSA is again sponsoring its International Weeks this summer - see www.msysa.org. These are advanced, residential coaching courses. David suggested that our U12 and U14 D1 coaches should think about trying to attend one. Note - there is no reimbursement for these courses.

Field Maintance:  (David Ward) At the completion of the season, we'll need to take down the portable goals on the Upper Field (put in the shed) as well as move all practice goals off of the Lower Field.

David suggested that we think about taking the U8 field at UPK out of service in the fall to do an additional one or two seedings. Andy made a suggestion that we could play games in the outfield area next to the Upper Field instead of UES.

We are planning a combined field maintenance at OMS with LUYAA the end of October. This would entail slit seeding and fertilizing the field there.

Newsletter Update/Status:  (Open) If you are interested in doing the newsletter, please contact Al Selwyn (alselwyn@yahoo.com).

Pictures:  (David Ward) Bill has received the pictures and will be sorting them by this weekend. Plaques have not arrived yet. Hopefully, we'll have pictures distributed before Memorial Day weekend and certainly by June 5/6.

D1 Tryouts: (David Ward) Division 1 tryouts will be held for U8Coed, U10Coed/Girls, U12Coed/Girls and U14Coed/Girls from June 1-4 and June 7-11. Details will be in a separate email.

4v4 League for U8s (David Ward) BCRC is moving to a 4v4 program for most of its U8s. FASA has already done this and there is a trend to this type of program in many areas of the country. Teams practice during the week and then have a 4v4 play day on Saturday. USA will continue to play 7v7 in FCYSL, but will keep an eye on this trend to see how it develops and whether or not it is successful.

End-of-Season Tournaments (David Ward) BASC tournament for U10+ is June 19/20. See www.boonsborosoccer.org. MAYAA U8 tournament is 6/12. The McSoccerFest 4v4 is July 10/11. See www.mcsoccerfest2004.com. Interested teams/coaches need to register their teams and pay entry fees. Teams registering for the Boonsboro and MAYAA tournaments will have their entry fees reimbursed by the Association.

Summer Pickup Games (David Ward) We will host summer pickup games again for U12/14 and high school/adult players. Both games will be held on Tuesdays starting June 15 and will be held from 7:00-dark. Games will run through the end of August. U12/14 game is open to all players who played for Urbana during either the Fall 2003 or Spring 2004 seasons (or those who will play for Urbana in Fall 2004). High school/adult game is open to all high-school age players who attend Urbana High School and coaches/parents of Urbana Soccer Association players.

USA College Scholarship (Al Selwyn) Three applications have been received for the college scholarship ($500). The BOD will review the applications and decide on the recipient by the end of this week. The winner will be announced at UHS during their awards ceremony in June.

Elections (David Ward) Elections were held for both President and Secretary. Al Selwyn (President) and Stephanie Downs (Secretary) were selected by acclimation. After being elected President, Al resigned as Treasurer. David Ward was then selected by the BOD to serve out the remaining year as Treasurer. The new BOD then selected Karen Selwyn to another 2-year term as At-Large member. The new BOD is as follows:

·        President - Al Selwyn

·        Vice President - Andy Keen

·        Treasurer - David Ward

·        Secretary - Stephanie Downs

·        At-Large - Karen Selwyn

Coaches Game/Picnic (David Ward) We will hold a coaches game and picnic at Urbana Park on either Sunday 6/6 or Saturday 6/12. Stephanie Downs will be organizing the event.

Spring 2004 Participation Awards: (Al Selwyn) Participation awards have arrived and Al distributed to coaches at the meeting. Other coaches can pick up their participation awards out of the shed starting on Thursday 5/20.

FASA Update:  (Donna Pike) FASA, Frederick Excel and Frederick United have combined forces and are now called FC Frederick (FC = Football Club - very European). Frederick Soccer Club was asked to join but declined.

USA Dutch 4v4 Tournament: (David Ward) We held a very successful and fun 4v4 tournament (Dutch-style) on Saturday 4/10. We hope to do similar tournaments in the future so look for more information prior to the start of Fall 2004 FCYSL games. It was suggested that we help the U8s a little more with running their games and that we not distribute trophies to winners given the fact that the tournament is for fun and not for hardware. An email detailing how the tournament will work will be sent out the first week in April.

UK Elite Camp for Summer 2004:  (Donna Pike) UK Elite will once again be running our camp. Dates are 7/5-7/9. Visit the UK Elite web site (www.ukelite.com) for registration/details. All registered Urbana Soccer players should receive camp flyers in the mail.

New Business:  (All) None.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00pm.
