Minutes for the Urbana Soccer Association meeting
May 15, 2007 at the Urbana Regional Public Library
Attendance: Dave Ward, Harry Hurst, Al Selwyn, Karen Selwyn, Herbert Avila, Mark Keating, Andy Keen, Clif Carey
The meeting was called to order at 7:24p
1) The minutes from the April 2007 meeting were approved without change.
2) Registrars Report (Karen Selwyn):
a) Registration is open and 40 have signed up already.
b) Fliers were mailed to the middle schools, fall ’06 and spring ’07 registered players (prior to the postage price hike!).
c) Request for waiver of registration fee for 2 players was approved on the basis of need.
d) Request for coach waiver of registration fees for a U12 Head Coach to be applied to his U8 child was approved.
3) Treasurers Report (Herbert Avila):
a) Operational fund has $17,181.71, Field fund in unchanged from April at $301.08.
b) Deposit for Urbana Park rehabilitation of fields was made to Mid Atlantic Turf Inc, $5400.00
c) The forms for Not-for-Profit status have arrived and are starting to be filled in – expect this to be a summer task.
4) VP’s Report (Harry Hurst):
a) Received a letter from Earl Eyler (Frederick County Department of Recreation and Parks) requiring that all goals be secure. Dave will send out a notice to all coaches.
b) Field use forms have been delivered to Urbana Elementary School and Windsor Knolls Middle School for use next season.
5) Secretary report (Clif Carey): Hi
6) Coaches Education (Dave Ward):
a) E-License Aug 25/26 in Walkersville sponsored by FCYSL
b) National Youth License is available June 29-July 1 (great for U8-U12) hosted by Northern Virginia .
c) Dutch Week International coaches/players camp is to be held at St. James Academy (south of Hagerstown ) June 24-29. Recommended for U12/U14 coaches.
d) Urbana Soccer Association will fund up to two coaches for advanced training [National Youth License, Dutch Week, etc] or the USSF C-license subject to Board approval.
e) Discussion about the ‘Soccer Source 360 animation library’ resulted in asking Dave Ward to request an evaluation of the program before the Board could recommend spending money ($40/coach) on this resource.
f) There was discussion on how to encourage Urbana Soccer Association coaches to take training – this is a continuing subject.
7) Equipment (Herbert Avila):
a) Paint purchased and delivered
b) Need to order 1 more set of Kwik goals for the fall.
8) Merchandise (Harry Hurst):
a) Merchandise is set for the fall. The jacket we sell is discontinued and thus available only while current supplies last. A search is ongoing to find a suitable replacement.
b) Winter caps will be added to the available merchandise.
9) Field maintenance (Harry Hurst):
a) End of season goal moving will occur in two shifts
i) Urbana Park (Upper and Lower): Saturday, June 2 at 7:00pm after scheduled games
ii) Windsor Knolls and Urbana Elementary School : Saturday, June 23 at 10:00am.
b) All fields will be closed on June 4 until August 1. If you need to practice use Urbana Elementary School
c) Ruppert Nurseries have been contacted to water the rehabilitated fields three times during the summer.

d) U14 Girls: Al Selwyn

Friday May 25 and Friday June 1 are rain dates
f) Remind all tryout players that showing up for tryouts does NOT register them for the Fall 2007 season.
g) Remind all players that they will not hear from their coach until the middle of July about whether or not they made the Division 1 team.
11) Evaluation of the Fall 2006/Spring 2007 Pentaleague lead to recommend that Dave speak to the LUYAA about joining their program for the following reasons:
a) The level of competition of the Urbana teams with the FC Frederick teams resulted in many mismatches.
b) The LUYAA program seems to be more leveled to match the Urbana teams.
c) Some coaches at FC Frederick ignored the slaughter rule resulting in some very upset players/coaches.
12) UHS Scholarship application: Deadline is today - May 15. Decisions will be made soon.
13) Soccer Camps: Local soccer camps this summer that Urbana Soccer Association recommends:
a) Frederick County Soccer Camp at Urbana High School (formerly South County Soccer Camp) -June 18-22, 8am-12noon, for players entering grades 1-9.
b) Elite Soccer Camp -July 9-13, 5:30-8:30pm, for ages 5-14 yrs.
c) Kick-Off Week - mandatory for U10/12/14 - July 30-Aug. 3, for Urbana Soccer Association players: U10's 6-8pm, U12's 5:30-8:30, U14's 5:30-8:30..
14) Coaches Game and Picnic: due to lack of volunteers to host will not be held this spring
15) Summer Pick-up Games – to be played at Urbana Elementary School
a) Adult – Mondays
b) Youth (U10-U14) Mondays
c) High School ages – Tuesdays. Will need an adult to supervise these games.
16) Tournaments:
a) MSC 4 v 4 – Monday May 28 (Memorial Day) U8-U14
b) MAYAA U8 – June 9 (All Urbana U8 teams will participate)
c) BASC U10 and above – June 16/17 (Deadline for registration is May 21st, http://www.boonsborosoccer.com). Clif Carey (U14) plans on competing
d) Mid-Atlantic Cup U10 and above – June 16/17 to be held at the Germantown SoccerPlex. Dave Ward, Mark Keating, and Al Selwyn plan on competing.
e) McDonald’s SoccerFest 4v4 – June 30-July 1
