Introduction

This document contains each of the U10 age group training sessions for the Spring 2008 season. An outline of the training sessions is given first followed by the details of each training session. The Urbana Soccer Association Training Curriculum Volume 3 - Training U10s manual contains more information on the overall U10 training curriculum and the details for all of the activities listed in the training sessions presented here.

Training Outline

The following table outlines the theme of each of the age group training sessions for the Spring 2008 season.

Foundation, Step Ups, Under the Bridge
For each, do once and count touches. Beat your score on the second try.

Juggling
2 minutes

Thigh/catch, thigh/thigh/catch, foot/catch, foot/foot/catch. Most in 30 seconds. Beat your score on the second try.

Lose Your Shadow
5 minutes

Stress changing directions instead of just dribbling away at speed.

Main
Activities

Paint the field
5 minutes

Using inside/outside dribbling technique only, use your ball as a paint brush and paint your entire field.

 

Work on right and left foot

Dribble the Line
5 minutes

Start by having players dribble any line they want on any part of the field. After they get the hang of it, make it a competitive relay.

 

Work on right and left foot.

Beat the Dummy
10 minutes

Matthews

 

Work on right and left foot

Run the Gauntlet
15 minutes

Stress Matthews and using the outside of your foot.

Small-Sided
Game

4v4 Line Soccer
20 minutes

One point awarded for stopping ball on the line (or dribbling over the line)
One point awarded for successfully doing a Matthews.

Wrap Up

2 minutes

What 2 moves did we learn today? See if players can demonstrate.

Cone Pick Up
2 minutes

To make this harder, each team must dribble a ball (one ball for the whole team) and the ball must touch the cone before they can pick up the cone.

Introduce Switchback, Pull-the-V, Pull ‘n Tuck

 

1st game – when get to an edge, must do a Switchback.

2nd game – when get to an edge, must do a Pull-the-V. However, instead of turning 180 degrees, you will turn 90 degrees.

3rd game – when get to an edge, must do a Pull ‘n Tuck. However, instead of turning 180 degrees, you will turn 90 degrees.

 

For the 90-degree games, see what happens if one team goes clockwise while the other goes counter-clockwise.

Knock Off
10 minutes

Stress Switchback, Pull-the-V and Pull ‘n Tuck to change directions

Beat the Dummy
10 minutes

Matthews, Switchback, Pull-the-V, Pull ‘n Tuck – BOTH FEET!!!!

20 minutes

Extra point awarded for successful Matthews, Switchback, Pull-the-V, Pull ‘n Tuck.
Extra point awarded if can shield for 5 seconds.
