Minutes for the Urbana Soccer Association meeting

 

November 17, 2008 at the Urbana Regional Library (Frederick County Public Libraries does not promote or endorse the views of the program sponsors or presenters.)

 

 

Attendance:  David Ward, David Grimaldi, Herbert Avila, Eva Navarro, Harry Hurst, Anh-Tuan Nguyenkhoa, Pat Purtscher, Darren D., J. Algaier

 

The meeting was called to order at 7:25P.

 

1. Minutes Approval (All)

  • Pending review at next meeting


2. Registrar's Report (Terri L.)

  • David W. - Terri L. is considering coming back


3. Treasurer's Report (Herbert)

  • Nothing to report


4. VP's Report (Harry)

  • Parks/Rec Meeting - December at Pinecliff Park
  • WKMS/UES field usage forms will be in to schools by end of December


5. Secretary's Report (Anh-Tuan)

  • Nothing to report


6. Coaches Education (David W.)

  • D License - 11/22,23 12/6,7 Le xington Park, MD 20653
  • E License - 12/13,14, SAC (Ellicott City)


7. Equipment Report (David W.)

  • Hunt down coaches not returning to recover practice gear


8. Merchandise (Harry H.)

  • David W. – hold off purchasing additional gear until FCF<> USA decision
  • Count what is available and sell on a first-in-first-out via registration


9. Field Maintenance (David W.)

  • Fields closed for the season


10. U8 Coaches Meeting (David W.)

  • Thursday November 20 at 7:30 at Monocacy Crossing Restaurant


11. Nick Choobineh incident (Board)

  • Received red card in 2nd game of U12 FCYSL tournament
  • Board voted, approved 1-year probation to Fall 2009

 

12. Season Post Mortem (All)

  • Good overall
  • USA received 1st ever red card(s) - 2 in the season
  • U14D1 - parents want Cliff C. back due to lack of team direction
    • 5 club players affected team loyalty
    • There was a lack of communication or unclear team guidelines
    • Mark K. resisted parents' help; needed to focus on the kids
    • Personalities aside, Cliff C. should take over team but Jose M. is not to assist

 

13. FC Frederick (David W.)

  • Reviewed the merger proposal
  • BOD is concerned about
    • FCF training around dribbling only and 'me' approach
    • the impact on older players who just what to play recreationally
    • the resolution on fees and fee structure
    • the community recreation being an important aspect to fight for and keep
  • Merger vote
    • Cliff C. - No via e-mail
    • David G. - Yes to move forward; undecided about final outcome
      • Concerned about community identity
      • FCF program makes sense long term
      • In need of a clear communication plan to bring in the community
      • USA has talented coaches but not the numbers
      • If we do not merge, USA needs a Director of Coaching
    • Herbert A. - Yes to move forward; undecided about final outcome
      • Concerned about community and possible splinter
      • Recreation [fun] a must condition
      • Need more USA board members to ensure representation
    • Harry H. - Yes to move forward; exposure is important
      • Community aspect is important so keep recreational aspect
      • The soccer community is dynamic so this may work
    • David W. - Yes to move forward
      • The world soccer model is regionally based; the US is splintered
      • USA has been consistent for the community
      • The best USA player is not getting the best exposure to break out
      • The recreational player can still be accommodated
      • USA will bring the fun philosophy to FCF and the whole of Frederick
    • Anh-Tuan N. - No; merger still lacks clarity of fine details
      • Supports ideal of the merger
      • FCF program has a good value proprosition
      • Recreational is very important to the community

 

14. Field Fee - Raise? (David W.)

  • Consider raising field maintenance fees from $15  to $25 per season
  • USA field rmaintenance fund running ~$10K short
  • Work by Mid-Atlantic company is important due to sports field experience
  • There are pportunities with the new UHS fields
  • Increase in fees will net ~$5K per season - voted Yes for Spring 2009 season
  • Consider concession stand for additional revenue
  • Consider increasing the sponsorship amount and split it across seasons

 

15. Sportsmanship Problems and Solutions (David W.)

  • All U8+ coaches must go to FCYSL sportsmanship
  • Two sportsmanship parents from each team who must also go to the class (and are sportsmanship liaisons for that team).
  • Push to next meeting due to time constraint

 

16. Tournament Results (David W.)

  • 3 Teams went to finals
  • 2 1st place results
  • 1 2nd place result
  • Congratulations!

 

17. New business (All)

  • Nothing new for this meeting
