September 2006 Meeting Minutes

Urbana Soccer Association Monthly Meeting

Tuesday, September 19, 2006

Ijamsville Methodist Church

Attendees:  David Ward, Al Selwyn, Karen Selwyn, Harry Hurst, Brian Wall

USA President David Ward called the meeting to order at 7:44pm.

Minutes:  The August meeting minutes were approved by Al Selwyn and seconded by Karen Selwyn.

Registrar’s Report:  (Karen Selwyn):  451 players have registered which is a record for us for a fall season. Karen will give final roster spreadsheets to David for FCYSL and gave David the FCYSL waiver forms and adult registration forms. Karen will finalize MSYSA registration for all age groups.

Treasurers Report:  (Herbert Avila): There is $15K+ in the Operating Budget.  The Field Fund has $5K+.  Payments have been received from most sponsors. Big remaining expenses – tournament fees, participation awards, remaining WKMS resurfacing fees.

Vice President’s Report: (Harry Hurst): Updated insurance forms have been given to both UES and WKMS.

Secretary’s Report: (Sean Lee): Not present.

Coaches Education:  (David Ward):  David started a discussion on finding one or more individuals who would be interested in organizing and fostering coaching education for our coaches. We are starting to fall behind some of the other organizations in this area and need to get more training available in the Urbana area. If anyone is interested, please contact David – david.ward@@jdsu.com.

Equipment: (Herbert Avila):  All equipment has been distributed and nets have been replaced as necessary. Herbert has 5 extra sets of Pugg goals if any coach needs a set.

On Sunday, we constructed 12 more wooden rebounding walls and installed all of them on the Upper Field for use by the U12s/14s. Thanks to Michael Jurgens, Greg Gordon, Richard Straus (and Addie and Wesley), Al Selwyn and Tony Reed.

Merchandise - (Harry Hurst): Backpacks are in and everything has been distributed.

Field Maintenance:  (Rod McNiff/David Ward): Thanks to Rod McNiff and sons for re-installing the green barrier fence on the Upper Field.

Updated 9/21 – the field resurfacing at WKMS is complete. The area has been cordoned off so please stay off those fields so the grass will grow.

Fall 2007 Kick-Off Week (David Ward/Brian Wall):  David relayed comments from players/parents on the U10 Kickoff Week to Brian. Brian was very happy with the way the week went (except for the heat, of course). We held a long discussion on how to do U10s, U12s and U14s next week and have decided to hold the U10s and U12s at UES with the U14s at Urbana Park . That means we will probably have to pay the 25% surcharge that Parks/Rec charges (but only on the U14 players) and it was felt that amount of money would be acceptab le given the fact we can stay in Urbana .

Fall 2007 Kickoff Week will be held July 30-August 3. U10s will probably have 2-hour sessions with U12s and 14s having 3-hour sessions. Details will be finalized in the spring.

Frederick County Youth Day at Hood (Brian Wall): The Hood College Men’s Soccer team is holding a youth day for its game on Sunday October 22. There will be a free clinic for players at 11:00 followed by the game at 1:00. David will distribute a flyer (via email) closer to the date.

Sponsors (David Ward): We obtained a record 30 sponsors for the Fall 2006/Spring 2007 soccer year.

Youth Nights at UHS (Karen Selwyn): The dates are set for Thursday September 28 for the UHS girls (vs TJ) and Tuesday October 10 for the UHS boys (vs. Century). Both games are at the UHS stadium with JV at 5:00 and Varsity at 6:45. Players wearing their Urbana jerseys will get in for free and also receive a $1 concessions coupon. Robin Humphreys U12GD1 team will help with warmups at the 9/28 game and be introduced with the varsity team. We will try to get the same thing for Andy Keens U12CD1 team for the boys game. Please come out and support our great high school teams.

Uniforms (Kelly Dingee): Uniforms went fairly smoothly. All uniforms have been distributed and any necessary exchanges made. We will reword the sock sizes during online registration so people know they are adult sock sizes.

Tournaments (David Ward): All U10 and older teams will play in the FCYSL tournament on November 4/5. U8 teams will play in the MAYAA U8 tournament which should be November 4. We will register to host the U10 tournament (at least U10CD1).

Participation Awards (Kim Goldstein): Trophy styles were presented and approved. Kim should order this week.

Pictures (Terri Sun): Bill Adkins has been very busy taking pictures and has done a great job working with coaches and teams. Last group for pictures is the U6s on Saturday 9/23. Pictures will be distributed via coaches at the end of the season.

Play Day Games with LUYAA (David Ward): We discussed holding our pre-season Play Day games with LUYAA teams. That was approved and we will give that a try for Spring 2007. David will contact LUYAA to organize. Since USA and LUYAA U8s play in different leagues (and different formats), the LUYAA-USA games will probably be for U10 and older. David expressed concern that it might turn into a Rivalry Week instead of the low-key games for new coaches to cut their teeth. We’ll remind all involved of this before the games start.

New Business:  (All)

The Baltimore Blast have some nice programs available to teams. Harry Hurst has information and contact information for any teams that are interested.

David Ward’s U10 team went to the DC United game on 9/9 and got to play on the field at halftime. We got to see Freddy Adu score on a free kick right in front of us as we waited next to the field for halftime. Michael Williams (assisted by Christi LaBella and Sarah Sebbane) scored a goal during our halftime game.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 p.m.

 Next meeting will be Octoberr 17, 2006 , 7:30 p.m.
