June 2006 Meeting Minutes

Urbana Soccer Association Monthly Meeting

Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Ijamsville Methodist Church

Attendees:  David Ward, Herbert Avila, Al Selwyn, Karen Selwyn, Harry Hurst, Tony Reed, Sean Lee

USA President David Ward called the meeting to order at 7:40pm.

Minutes:  The April meeting minutes were approved by Karen Selwyn and seconded by Herbert Avila.

Registrar’s Report:  (Karen Selwyn) Registration ends on 7/1.  373 kids have signed up so far.  Walk-in registration was sparsely attended – 16 people total.  We will probably be able to drop down to one walk-in day next season.  We need to determine how to charge people who switch age groups after paying.  Karen and David are scheduled for a “team making” class.

Treasurers Report:  (Herbert Avila) 3 deposits have been made from Demosphere since 6/17 for a total of $17,847.79.  There is $31,028.74 in the Operating Budget.  $13,500 will be used from the Field Fund for resurfacing WKMS.

Vice President’s Report: (Harry Hurst) We will not be able to use UES this fall.  Due to construction at the UHS, the high school teams will be playing at UES.  We should be able to make due with Urbana Park and WKMS.  We still should file the forms with UES, just in case something falls through.

Secretary’s Report: (Sean Lee) Nothing to report.

Coaches Education:  (David Ward) UK Elite coach’s clinic was held on 6/22.  Four coaches were in attendance.

U8 & U10 curriculums are being updated.  U6 curriculum is in progress.

Post Mortem meetings completed.

David will work on a U12 curriculum over the winter.

Equipment: (Herbert Avila) Herbert will order new feet for Kwik goals and stakes for Gen 2 goals.  Parks and Rec will repair damaged Kwik goal.  Herbert will check our inventory of Pugg goals.  Many of them seem to be disappearing.

Merchandise - (Harry Hurst) Backpacks are due in 8/15.  Harry will download list of pre-purchased items from the internet.

Field Maintenance:  (Rod McNiff/David Ward) Goals have been moved and locked.  Kwik goals are locked in the shed.  WKMS resurfacing contract has been signed and scheduled for the first 3 weeks in September.  Fields 1 & 2 will be closed for the entire fall season.

U10 Fall 2006 Kick-Off Week (David Ward)   Scheduled for July 31 – August 4.  So far 55 kids have signed up.  There will be room for 80 players.

Fall 2006 Budget (David Ward) Budget was unanimously approved.  Items of discussion were; the possible integration of new rebounding walls with the existing parks and rec fencing, the acquisition of 30 new “homemade” J hooks from Tony Reed, and the fact that new coaches will only receive the USYS video and standard coaches book.

MSYSA Meeting (David Ward) On-line registration is required for all travel programs.  USA may migrate to the state’s on-line program in a few years once the kinks have been ironed out.

College Scholarships  (Karen Selwyn)  Jackie Chen was voted the winner of the scholarship.  A discussion about increasing award money was tabled for another meeting.

Spring 2006 Post Mortem (David Ward) Overall coaches were happy.  The only major change will be to move the U8 4v4 World Cup tournament to the middle of the season.

Tournaments (David Ward)

McDonald’s SoccerFest 4v4 – July 8th & 9th 4v4 Tournament that is taking place in Columbia, MD.

Congratulations to Herbert Avila’s U8 team for winning the MAYAA D1 tournament.

Summer Pick Up Games (David Ward) They are being well attended by all ages.

Summer Soccer Camps (David Ward) The South County Soccer Camp had poor attendance. The UK Elite Soccer Camp will be held at Urbana Elementary on July 10th – 14th.  So far registration is light for this camp.

Elections (All): A solicitation for volunteers for the fall has been sent out.  The most important positions to fill are uniform coordinator, Participation award coordinator, picture coordinator, and several coaching positions.

New Business:  (All)

Nothing.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 p.m.

 Next meeting will be July 18, 2006 , 7:30 p.m.
