Ijamsville Methodist Church

Attendees:  David Ward, Herbert Avila, Stephanie Downs, Al Selwyn, Tony Reed, Harry Hurst, Charlotte Jordan, Mark Keating, Paul Young, Tim Gipson, Joe Allen

USA President David Ward called the meeting to order at 7:36pm.

Minutes:  The January meeting minutes were approved by Harry Hurst and seconded by David Ward.

Registrar’s Report:  (Al Selwyn aka Karen) Coaches, please take the time to read the papers in the coaches packet.  The packet was put together with a great deal of time and effort from Karen and contains lots of information.  Please email or call Karen (contact info is on the cover letter) if you have a problem or question!  If you have not turned in your background form….you must do this before your first practice!  Coaching Licenses:  Thank you to those that have sent copies and if you haven’t, this is a reminder to send them in.  Karen will send an excel spreadsheet to all the coaches with roster information.  There are 468 registered players (a new record!) with 92 in the U6 age group.

Treasurers Report:  (Herbert Avila) There is $26,523.85 in the Operating Budget.  Recent deposits include 293 Registration Fees, $200 Donation, Sponsor Checks and Frederick County Security Deposit.  Recent Expenses paid include FCYSL fees, Awards, Coaches Polos, Pugg Goals and Field Use Fees.  Herbert received a refund for the Pugg Goals that were never received from Absolute Soccer.

Vice President’s Report: (Harry Hurst) Facilities Request forms were filled out for WKMS (actual field use) and Urbana Elementary.  Harry will drop these off at both schools.  Insurance forms were already sent in.

Secretary’s Report: (Stephanie Downs) Nothing to report.

Coaches Education:  (David Ward)

Curriculums and Training Sessions:

U6: David will speak with Greg to determine if the new curriculum will be implemented with the spring season.

U8 & U10: The curriculum is basically the same as the Fall with more emphasis on controlling the ball, receiving the ball from the air and shielding.  Dribbling moves are the same.

Coaches CD:  This is an electronic version of most of the paper work in the coaches packet as well as USA bylaws, Spring Season information, curriculums, games etc.   Games are animated on the CD but you must register on line with Play Manager.  There is a readme.txt file on the CD with instructions.

USYS Coaches Connection:  All USA coaches now have a subscription to the Coaches Connection for one year.  This includes a monthly email and Success in Soccer Magazine.

New Coaches:  In addition to other equipment, new coaches will receive a book with games and practice ideas.  Al Selwyn will be the USA New Coach Mentor.

Upcoming USSF Coaching Courses: There will be an E License course on March 11th & 12th in The Heights School, Potomac and an F course in Middletown on March 18th.  Information on Coaches Education can be found at:   http://msysa.org/.  Division 1 Coaching requirements are now in effect.  U10 and U12 Division 1 Coaches will need to have an E License and U14 Division 1 Coaches will need to have a D License.  Licenses are required to be obtained by the Fall Season.

Equipment: (Herbert Avila) Herbert has ordered most of the new equipment for the Spring season.  New Pugg Goals are on order and Kwik goals have not yet been received.  Herbert has cleaned up the shed and has everything from the shed at his home (except Agility equipment) to inventory and re-distribute.  New Coaches have 1st priority then current Coaches.  Current Coaches need to email equipment requests to Herbert at cruziman@yahoo.com.  We are again missing Select game balls and Herbert will order new ones.  Coaches need to make sure the game balls are placed back in the shed at the end of each game day.

Merchandise - (Harry Hurst) Harry will set up a merchandise tent during the Dutch 4v4 at Urbana Park on March 25th.  Urbana merchandise will be available for sale and previously ordered merchandise will be available for pick-up.  Harry will distribute merchandise orders that are not picked up to the appropriate coaches to distribute to their players.

Field Maintenance:  (Rod McNiff/David Ward) Goals were assembled and placed throughout the Lower and Upper fields.  Goals were also moved to Urbana Elementary and WKMS.  David has had bags of Turf Ace product delivered and will spread on both Urbana fields this weekend.  The product absorbs water and will become part of the soil.  We will need to paint  initial field lines and install a barrier fence on the lower and upper fields.  This is planned for March 18th.

U10 Fall 2006 Kick-Off Week (David Ward)   Urbana Soccer will host a Soccer Camp for all the U10 players during the first week of the Fall 2006 Season.  The camp will be given by Brian Wall, Men’s Soccer Coach at Hood College.  There will be several other trainers and college players to help with the camp.  The camp will run 5:30-8:00 all week.  The camp fee will be $55 per family (the rest of the fee will be subsidized by the Association).  Registration for the camp will be handled by Brian Wall.  If this year’s camp is successful, future camps will be opened to other age groups.

Mandatory USA Coaches Meeting (David Ward) A mandatory pre-season coaches meeting will be held in conjunction with our monthly USA meeting on March 21st at 7:30 (Ijamsville Methodist Church).  We will go over game protocol, referee fees, Play Day, etc…

Dutch 4v4 (David Ward) The Dutch 4v4 will be held at Urbana Park on Saturday, March 25th.  This is an individual tournament and will be played based on age group:

 9:00 - 11:00            U8

11:00 - 1:00            U10

1:00 - 3:00            U12

3:00 - 4:30            U14

4:30 - 6:30            Open

Players need to be at the park about 15 minutes before the start time to register.  Herbert suggested a World Cup theme in honor of the FIFA World Cup being played in Germany this year.

Spring 2006 Play Day(David Ward) A Play Day be held at Urbana Park on Sunday, March 26th.   All Urbana teams (U8-U19) will play other Urbana teams in the same age group before county games start.   This helps coaches and players work out the kinks if necessary before official games are played.

Indoor Soccer  (All)  Al Selwyn (U14 Girls) are having a very competitive season.  The opposing teams have been from WAGs or MSI Classic.  Harry Hurst (U12 Girls) has been playing in a less competitive division and has had the opportunity to score many, many goals.  Their team now has specific rules on what is required (passing, left foot, etc…) before the ball can be taken to the goal.

College Scholarships  (Al Selwyn)  The  Urbana Soccer Association Scholarship Application Forms have been provided to Urbana High School and are also located on the Urbana Soccer website.  The High School Soccer Coaches have been informed.  The $500 scholarship will be awarded to an Urbana High School graduating student who is a past or present member of the Urbana Soccer Association.  Applicants must be planning to attend a two (2) year or four (4) year college, technical, or vocational school in the Fall.  The deadline for completing the application is May 15th

Appreciation Dinner  (David Ward)  Stephanie will call Jimmy Azat, the owner of Paisano’s in Rockville to inquire about holding an Appreciation dinner for Urbana Coaches and Volunteers.

Participation Awards  (Brenda Rayno)  Not Present.  Participation awards possibilities for U10 players and up have been reviewed and pricing has been worked out.  U6 and U8 players will receive trophies.

Pictures  (Charlotte Jordan)  )  Charlotte will coordinate the pictures for the Spring season.  We will use the same photographer, Bill Adkins.  Charlotte will distribute picture forms to coaches.  The pictures will be scheduled during March 27-31, April 7-8 and April 10-11.

New Business:  (All)

David wants to remind all the coaches to minimize practicing in the penalty boxes on all the fields.

There will be a U10 and a U12 field on the lower field to help reduce the number of Sunday home games.   New County requirements include painting coaches boxes and spectator lines.  Teams are only allowed to have 3 team officials in the coaches box.

4v4 repair materials are in.  Al will fix the 4v4 goals in the shed (waiting for warm weather)!

The meeting was adjourned at 8:44 p.m.

 Next meeting will be March 21,2006 , 7:30 p.m.
