Minutes for the Urbana Soccer Association meeting
June 19, 2007 at the Urbana Regional Library (Frederick County Public Libraries does not promote or endorse the views of the program sponsors or presenters).
Attendance: David Ward, Harry Hurst, Al Selwyn, Karen Selwyn, Herbert Avila, Mark Keating, Clif Carey
The meeting was called to order at 7:20pm
1) The minutes from the May 2007 meeting were approved without change.
2) Registrars Report (Karen Selwyn):
a) 260 registrations so far.
3) Treasurers Report (Herbert Avila):
a) The forms for Not-for-Profit status have arrived and are starting to be filled in – expect this to be a summer task.
4) VP’s Report (Harry Hurst):
a) Field requests for school fields have been declined because our insurance dates are not consistent with field request dates (insurance year is not the same as the school year and insurance cannot be demonstrated for the school year) Working on this.
5) Secretary report (Clif Carey): Parks and Rec’s announcement for community grants from the June 14 Frederick News Post. May be a good way to fund future big maintenance projects.
6) Coaches Education (David Ward):
a) D-License = July 14/15 at Arundel MS (see dates from May minutes)
b) E-License = Aug 25/26 at Monocacy MS sponsored by FCYSL
c) National Youth License is available June 29-July 1 (great for U8-U12) hosted by Northern Virginia .
d) Dutch Week International coaches/players camp is to be held at St. James Academy (south of Hagerstown ) June 24-29. Recommended for U12/U14 coaches.
7) Equipment (Herbert Avila):
a) Non-returning coaches are asked to return equipment (w/o mice) as soon as possible
8) Merchandise (Harry Hurst):
a) Winter ski cap is to be added to the selection. Merchandise orders are slow at this time.
9) Field maintenance (David Ward):
a) Urbana Park renovation is going on plan and looks promising.
b) Rupert Nurseries have been contacted to water the rehabilitated fields three times during the summer.
c) Goal moving – all goals have been moved to storage or locked for the summer. A special thank you goes to Brooks Ward who helped a whole lot.
10) Goal Maintenance (David Ward):
a) Unlosable J-hooks need stronger lanyards
b) 4 v 4 goals need many repairs (bars, bolts, clips, stronger lanyards) – Al Selwyn will assess and repair.
11) Spring 2007 wrap-up: it was agreed that it was a good season with a lot of fun.
12) Fall U8’s will be run in house with LUYAA. 5 v 5 league with LUYAA instead of the FCF Pentaleague was adopted to establish more level competition and game philosophy.
13) UHS Scholarship:
a) Congratulations to 2007 winner Allyson Montello.
b) Due to the very low number of applicants for the scholarship the Board voted to discontinue the scholarship after discussion.
14) Soccer Camps: Local soccer camps this summer that Urbana Soccer Association:
a) Frederick County Soccer Camp at Urbana High School (formerly South County Soccer Camp) -June 18-22, 8am-12noon, for players entering grades 1-9.
b) Elite Soccer Camp -July 9-13, 5:30-8:30pm, for ages 5-14 yrs.
c) Kick-Off Week - mandatory for U10/12/14 - July 30-Aug. 3, for Urbana Soccer Association players: U10's 6-8pm, U12's 5:30-8:30, U14's 5:30-8:30..
15) Coaches Game and Picnic: due to lack of volunteers to host will not be held this spring
16) Summer Pick-up Games – to be played at Urbana Elementary School
a) Adult – Mondays
b) Youth (U10-U14) Mondays
c) High School ages – Tuesdays. Will need an adult to supervise these games.
17) Tournaments: Most of the teams competed and did well.
18) Fall 2007 Budget: Presented by David Ward and approved by the Board.
19) New Business:
a) The Urbana Village Voice article highlighting the USA U8 program was shared
b) The Urbana District Park is starting up and is in the design stages. The park is to be completed Spring 2010
c) David informed the Board that there is a proposal at the FCYSL to help avoid poor parental conduct issues at matches that team parents, coaches, and players of each team will occupy opposite sides of the pitch from the opposing team parents, coaches, and players.
