Urbana Soccer Association Monthly Meeting

Tuesday November 30, 2004

Ijamsville Methodist Church

Attendees:  Al Selwyn, Karen Selwyn, Harry Hurst, David Ward, Stephanie Downs, Dave Cromartie, Robin Humphreys

USA President Al Selwyn called the meeting to order at 7:34 pm.

Minutes:  The October meeting minutes were approved by David Ward and seconded by Harry Hurst.

Fall 2004 Season Recap:  (Al Selwyn)  It was a great season with a lot of fun and good soccer.  The Fall end-of-season FCYSL tournament was also a success. Robin Humphreys’ U10 Girls team placed 1st in their division, Al Selwyn’s U12 Girls team placed 1st in their division and Paul Young’s U14 Girls team placed 2nd in their division.

Registrar’s Report:  (Karen Selwyn) Walk-in Registration for the Spring 2005 season will be held Saturday, Jan. 15th and Saturday, Jan. 29th from 9-12.  Registrations for returning players will be mailed out at the beginning of January.  Feb. 1st will be the close of registration.

Treasurers Report:  (David Ward) The Field Fund has $5,745.45 and the Operating Budget has $8309.00 in the treasury.  The following expenses need to be paid: Sponsor Gifts, Shooting Wall and Office Supplies.  We will have an approximate starting balance of $5,000 for the Spring.

Vice President’s Report: (Andy Keen) Absent.  Field Requests for Spring 2005 will completed before Christmas.  Parks and Rec requests are to be turned at the December 14th meeting.

Secretary’s Report: (Stephanie Downs) Nothing to report.

Coaches Education:  (Al Selwyn) There is an E License course being offered in Middletown on December 4th and 5th.  Contact David Afzali at 301-371-4966.  All coaches are encouraged to attend.

Indoor Soccer:  (Al Selwyn)  Several Urbana Teams will be playing indoor in Germantown.  There are also indoor sessions in Frederick.

Division 1 Bylaws:  (Karen Selwyn)   Karen will send the proposed amendment to the bylaws, regarding Division 1 placement, to the Board so that it can be approved by the January Meeting.

Graham Ramsay-Field Training:  (David Ward) There were approximately 10 Coaches and 16 players at the Training Session held in October.  The session involved allowing the children to play and to structure the coaching around what was observed during the play.  Graham also encourages having a shooting game during practice.  We are hoping to have Graham come out to do two training sessions in March.

My Team One Call (David Ward) This is a service which allows a coach to send in the team phone list and call in a message that is disbursed by the Service to the team (example: “Practice is cancelled”).  The service could be used per season (the entire association) or by number of calls.  David will confirm pricing and we may try this out for the Spring Season.

Field Maintenance:  (Rod McNiff) Absent.  Urbana Fields were maintained beautifully by Rod McNiff and clan!  The U8 Field looks good and grass has grown on the U14 field.  The U10/U12 field will need maintenance in the Spring.  Oakdale Middle was to be maintained by LUYAA.  Urbana will share both Oakdale Middle and Elementary and Spring Ridge fields with LUYAA.  We will also need to pay the LUYAA contractor for grass cutting for one field at WKMS.

Shooting Wall (David Ward) The placement at Urbana Park has been staked out (behind the Tennis Court next to the U10/U12 field). It has been approved by the County.  An approval is pending from Parks and Rec.

Merchandise (Harry Hurst) Sponsor Bags and Hats need to be purchased.  Order forms will be sent out with Spring Registration.   Harry will complete an inventory of current merchandise to determine what is needed for Budget Funds.

Sponsors (Harry Hurst) There are three sponsors that need to send in sponsor fees.

Juggling Patches (David Ward) David showed the sample of the Juggling Patch which will be implemented this spring by all coaches to give out to players who have mastered their juggling skill.  There is a base Urbana patch and patches for successfully juggling 10, 25, 50, 75, and 100 times (all the patches make a complete circle).  The cost is $623.48 for all the patches and this should last approximately 3-4 seasons.  The patches were approved and David will make the order.

U8 League:  (Al Selwyn) The U8 teams will have one night of training together this spring (as many teams that can be coordinated) and one night of team training.  David will provide the curriculum for the group training sessions.

New Business:  (All)

Al contacted Chuck Nichols (Urbana High School Girls Soccer Coach) to discuss increasing the ties between Urbana High and Urbana Soccer Association.  Coach Nichols will set something up with Al after the Holidays.   Al is following up with the Boys coach.

Any issues with Referees need to be sent to Al and Al will take back to the League.

The Association is encouraging all teams to participate in the end of season tournaments.  Al is checking into the timing for both the Boonsboro and MAYAA tournaments at the end of the Spring Season.

Al will provide an updated budget for approval at the January meeting.

We are trying to create a more unified Soccer Association.  We will have a Dutch 4v4 and a Play Day for Urbana Soccer players in the Spring.  We would also like to have a Spring Social or Picnic for the Association during the Spring Season with games for all age groups.  We are looking for a volunteer to be an Events Committee Coordinator to manage this effort.  Will we also need a volunteer to be the Pictures Coordinator for the Spring.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:09 pm.

Next meeting will be January 19th, 7:30pm.

***No December Meeting***

Happy Holidays!!
