Urbana Soccer Association Monthly Meeting

Attendees: Al Selwyn, Karen Selwyn, David Ward, Stephanie Downs, Brian Downs, Dave Cromartie, Steve McKinley, Clif Carey, Dan Giffin
USA President Al Selwyn called the meeting to order at 7:35 pm.
Minutes: The January meeting minutes were approved by Karen Selwyn and seconded by Brian Downs and David Ward.
DC United: (Dan Giffin) Dan Giffin of DC United provided flyers for the March 9th match between DC United & Harbour View FC in Germantown and the DC United Opening Night on April 9th. Copies of the March 9th Flyer will be available to all coaches. Anyone interested in tickets for the Germantown match can contact Dan at 202-587-5479 or dgiffin@dcunited.com. He will honor the $16 ticket price for Urbana Soccer Association teams or families. The seats are General Admission and parking will be $5. Dan will communicate with Al on setting up an organization affiliation between DC United and Urbana Soccer. There may be Coaches Training with their technical staff, ticket deals and youth nights available. The Dribble, Pass and Shoot program is also a possibility.
Registrars Report: (Karen Selwyn) We currently have 437 players registered. There are 104 U6 players and registration for U6 is now closed. There will be 28 teams and Coaches packets should be available by next Wednesday. We are still looking for a Coach in each of these age groups: U8, U10 & U12 Co-ed and we also need a U19 Girls Coach.
Treasurers Report: (David Ward) The Field Fund has $5,745.45 and the Operating Budget has $12,340.99 in the treasury. Approximately 40% of registration fees have been deposited and currently only the Frederick County League fees have been paid.
Vice Presidents Report: (Andy Keen) Absent
Secretarys Report: (Stephanie Downs) Nothing to report.
Meeting with UHS Coaches: (Al Selwyn) David and Al met with the UHS Soccer Coaches. Urbana is working to establish a better relationship between Urbana Soccer Association and the High School. Mentoring opportunities and youth nights with team recognition were discussed.
Dutch 4v4 & Play Day: (David Ward) The Dutch 4v4 for all Urbana players will be held on Saturday, March 19th and the Play Day between Urbana teams for all age groups will be held on Sunday, March 20th. David is working on participation awards for the Dutch 4v4 and Al will confirm the upper field is available for the Play day on the 20th. All teams are expected to attend this event.
5v5: (Al Selwyn) FC Frederick is looking to partner with Urbana to change the U8 program and create a 5v5 format in Fall of 2005. Urbana U8 teams would play FC Frederick teams in this new format. Commitment is needed by both groups by June to implement this by the Fall season. The long term goal is to have all of Frederick County Youth Soccer League adopt this format.
College Scholarship: (Al Selwyn) The scholarship forms are now at UHS and will be advertised through the Soccer coaches and will be on the announcements. A copy of the scholarship application is also available on the Urbana website.
Coaches Education: (Al Selwyn) There is an E License course being offered in Germantown on March 12th and 13th. The Association will reimburse this expense. To attend, coaches need to contact: steve@msisoccer.org. There is also information at the MSI website: http://www.msisoccer.org/?page=courses-clinics. The NCSAA State, Regional and Advanced Region courses will be offered in Boonsboro on March 4, 5 and 6th. The same courses will also be offered at Hood College on March 6 (State) and March 11, 12 and 13th (Regional and Advanced Regional). Coaches should contact Al Selwyn if interested. Coaches will be reimbursed for the cost after taking the class. The UK Elite coaching clinic will be held March 5 at Urbana Park from 2:00-4:00 p.m. All Urbana coaches and assistant coaches are encouraged to attend.
Equipment: (Herbert Avila) Absent. Coaches will need to contact Herbert for equipment and first aid supplies for the Spring Season. Remember if you don't ask for it....you don't get it. New Coaches will receive equipment and first aid kits and do not need to contact Herbert. Herbert's email is cruziman@yahoo.com.
Field Maintenance: (Rod McNiff) Absent. Rod has requested help with setting up goal posts on February 27th at 1:00 p.m. The initial field lining will take place on Saturday, March 5th. The more help we have to get this done, the less time it will take. Coaches will be sent e-mail reminders to complete field lining during the season.
Play Manager (David Ward) Play Manager is an animation software that David has purchased to help create coaching manuals for Urbana Soccer. The Association approved the purchase of 50 licenses so that coaches will be able to view the animated manuals. The total cost will be $250.00.
Shooting Wall (David Ward) The shooting wall is not done yet but work continues
The contractor will repair the grass when complete but we should be prepared for emergency field maintenance if necessary. David has the paint and primer for painting when the wall is done. Parks and Rec has already moved and replanted the tree from that area.
Merchandise (Harry Hurst) Absent.

Division 1 By-law Amendment (Karen Selwyn) Language to be added to the By-laws for Division 1 Try-outs, registration and requirements was discussed. Final language will be submitted by Karen to Andy for distribution before the next meeting.
Participation Awards (Brenda Rayno) Absent. Brenda is looking into participation awards and trophies for the Spring Season.
Appreciation Dinner (David Ward) Brian Downs will contact the Azat family to schedule an Appreciation dinner for Urbana Volunteers in either late March or early April.
Pictures (Charlotte Jordan) Absent. Charlotte will coordinate the pictures for the Spring season. We will use the same photographer, Bill Adkins.
New Business: (All)
David will send out the Juggling patch information to the Coaches once we have a complete list of Coaches.
David will also schedule a meeting with the U8 Coaches and Assistant Coaches to go over group training sessions that will start March 1st. A tentative date for this was set for February 24th. David will confirm the date and the coaches will be notified.
